Beyond the Pipe

Did you know...

We all know that cigarettes are addictive. Most smokers say they have tried to stop at one time, but can’t seem to kick this bad habit. There are many programs and support groups out there that can help you quit smoking, but the determination and strength it takes to quit can only come from deep down inside of you. Challenge yourself; try to quit. Here is a list of things you can do whenever you get the urge to smoke.

  • Dance wildly in your living room to your favorite song.
  • Clean your closet and take all your old clothes to a homeless shelter.
  • Think of how sad your child, grandchild, niece or nephew would be if they lost you.
  • Make a collage with all your favorite photographs.
  • Go swimming.
  • Chew on a piece of dried meat.
  • Learn about different world cultures.
  • Study the stars.
  • Talk to an elder.
  • Volunteer.
  • Design a new dancing outfit.
  • Read a book.
  • Save all the money you used to spend on cigs and book a trip to Mexico… Hawaii… Anywhere!
  • Plant some flowers.
  • Pray.

We all have something to offer
If we take into consideration the wise words of Oglala leader, Black Elk, we might begin to understand that we all can contribute to the healing process, no matter our past experiences and past mistakes.
